YOU YANGS REGIONAL PARK

Public BBQ

The You Yangs proved a delightful escape from Melbourne's bustle, though I quickly discovered why the locals warned about bringing a pram - those rocky tracks are decidedly unfriendly to wheels. The drive through canola country was half the charm, honestly. Flinders Peak's summit steps had me questioning my fitness, but the panoramic views made every wheeze worthwhile. The park's surprisingly well-equipped with barbecues and toilets, though you'll want to pack your tucker - there's absolutely nothing nearby unless you fancy gnawing on granite. The East-West loop walk offered just enough challenge without requiring mountaineering skills, while Big Rock provided the kids with endless scrambling opportunities. What struck me most was how this felt like a family-friendly Grampians - all the natural beauty with half the drama. The dog-friendly policy (leashed, mind you) means even the four-legged family members can enjoy the adventure. Fair warning: bring water, bring food, and bring realistic expectations about your fitness level.
